Alright peeps. It’s like really really ridiculously close to being tomorrow. Which means it’s LBCC time. I didn’t get to go last year with the rest of the Guildies because I was in a little place called AUSTRALIA. No big deal, it’s just a friggin CONTINENT with REVERSE TOILET FLOW. Anyway, this year, I’m coming down to BEACH, full force.

My Effinfunny booth #214 will be hosting a variety of signings from all my shows: The Guild, Legend of Neil & Save the Supers, together at last. What’s this below? A schedule?! HOW CONVENIENT-

At 5pm we have the SAVE THE SUPERS PANEL on HOW TO CREATE A SUCCESSFUL WEB SERIES. Wow, that sounds informative! We have the entire main cast, as well as producers Jeff Winkler, Josie Kavadoy and kick ass production designer Greg Aronowitz talking about how we managed to create a show for My Damn Channel with a meager budget and still manage to get Seth Green to guest star. P.S. If you haven’t seen the show, WHY DO YOU INSIST ON DEPRIVING YOURSELF OF JOY?

Lastly but not leastly, we’re putting on the OFFICIAL AFTER SHOW, a comedy nerdstravaganza, we’re calling the Effinfunny Fest. We have an amazing lineup of improv, musical, and stand up comedians “topped” off (you’ll get that pun in a moment) with a 30 minute musical performance of my favorite homoerotic film… TOP GUN! I don’t want to give too much away but Tom Lenk plays Kelly McGillis and it’s just so good. Better than a bacon-wrapped blow job good.

Click here to read a “nomination” letter I received informing me my podcast has been “selected” to “win” an LA Comedy “Award.” Basically, it’s a “bringer” show with an Internet twist. There’s an article on Splitsider today which explains it perfectly:

If you’re an avid internet comedy fan you may have come across the website for the LA Comedy Awards, an awards show that hands out prizes to stand-ups, podcasts, films, and internet videos, but the whole awards show charges people to participate, allowing entrants to basically buy themselves into an awards show that isn’t a real thing in the first place. Entrants are charged anywhere between $0.99 and $19 to submit their material, and people are even charged to vote, which is completely absurd. It’s all a despicable, low-rent scheme aimed at naive young comedians, taking advantage of their hopes and dreams by promising a big flashy awards show, red carpet interviews, and the chance to add a (phony) award to their resumes if they donate enough money. The LA Comedy Awards website features logos for respected comedy entities like Funny or Die and The Onion as if they sponsor the show when they clearly have nothing to do with it. So, if you’re a young comedy person thinking of entering your stand-up set/podcast/video into this contest think again because it’s the awards show equivalent of a “bringer show” for stand-ups, and an LA Comedy Award is just something some guy made up to take money from gullible comedy novices.

I contacted the guy behind this horseshit and asked him to remove me from his voting scheme. He refused to comply. GREAT, now I get to have fun on the Internet railing against a bullshit subhuman!

He’s nominated my show and many others for “free” in an attempt to build credibility to his completely invented fucktarded awards show. I am sure he will take a generous “Producer” fee to pay rent on his undoubtedly gross apartment in Redondo Beach.

There is no way in the world anyone would be dumb enough to pay 99¢ to vote for this garbage, but the very idea of my name being associated with it is toilet trash on a level I can’t even comprehend. So if this guy wouldn’t privately respect that I wanted no part of this, fine. He’s thanked me for the “free publicity.” I say, let him have it. Congratulations, fuckbag! Now everyone knows you’re a parasite!

There’s a general understanding that says, “insurance companies— oh they’re awful,” but since Progressive turned their shit hose on my late sister and my parents, I’ve learned some things that really surprised me.

I’ll try to cleave to the facts. On June 19, 2010, my sister was driving in Baltimore when her car was struck by another car and she was killed. The other driver had run a red light and hit my sister as she crossed the intersection on the green light.

“Tragedy + time = comedy. But I don’t have the benefit of time. So I’m just going to tell you the tragedy and know that everything is going to be okay.”

So began Tig Notaro’s set last night at her show “Tig and friends” at the Largo.

Actually, that wasn’t the beginning of her set. It began when Ed Helms welcomed her to the stage and she crossed over, took the microphone, and said “Thank you, thank you, I have cancer, thank you, I have cancer, really, thank you.”

Applause gave way to reticent laughter as she explained how she had planned a set about bees flying alongside her car on the 405, but that she couldn’t possibly do her “silly jokes” when all this was going on. And that’s when she told us that 3 days ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, in both breasts.

But she didn’t just have cancer. She went on to explain that in some manic twist of fate, while her career is at an all-time high — she is moving to New York to work on Amy Schumer’s new television show, she was on This American Life — concurrently, all these terrible circumstances have befallen her over the past 3 months: pneumonia made way for a debilitating bacterial infection in her digestive tract for which she was hospitalized and lost 30 pounds off of her already small frame, days after being released from the hospital, her young mother died suddenly and tragically (fell, hit her head, died), then she and her partner broke up, and then, now, cancer. In both breasts. (“You have a lump.” “No, doctor, that’s my breast.” — one of her most renowned bits is about someone remarking upon her small breasts)

For the first half of her set, even though she was telling the story in perfect grace and humor, I couldn’t laugh. For the second half, for the first time in my life, as far as I can recall, I genuinely laughed and cried at the exact same time, bewildered at the tragedy and the remarkably calm, clever prism through which she assessed her terrible set of circumstances.

While telling us anecdotes from these personal tragedies, all along the way, she assured the audience “it’s okay, I’m going to be okay.” At one part, when she reached a dark place wherein most of the audience could not find the will to laugh, she said “maybe I’ll just go back to telling jokes about bees. Should I do that?” there were several “NOs” and one insistent loud male voice who cried out

“NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT. THIS IS FUCKING INCREDIBLE.”

She looked genuinely taken aback, and relieved. She’d managed to make the tragic not only palatable but overwhelmingly engaging. She’d done it.

Tig’s been one of my favorite comedians for a couple of years now. I told her how much I loved her work after a set at UCB one night, and she received my words so kindly that she came towards me and gave me a hug. I’ve gone downtown to bars by myself and sat for hours alone, just waiting to see her headlining set.

At the end of her routine last night, everyone in the audience gave her a standing ovation, for me her wowed, grateful, happy face blurry with my own salty eyes. She’d released her horrific story into the hearts of her fans. I’m sure we all felt like I did; we were made witness to a truly historical moment in comedy, by one of the industry of comedy’s absolute greatest.

Bill Burr followed her set, inexplicably able to make the whole audience uproarious with laughter by the end. Bill Burr then brought on Louis C.K., the surprise guest of the night, which was a shock - it was my first time ever seeing him live - but it was very difficult to give him my enrapt attention after Tig’s on-stage confessions.

My head is still swimming around what happened last night. We all saw the ultimate embodiment of what comedy is supposed to do: deeply personal tragedies somehow transformed, with the enormous, necessary power of an open-hearted audience, into brilliantly-written truths that we’ll all take home with us and keep with us as long as we’ll have a sound-enough mind to remember that show. If schadenfreude is pleasure derived from the misfortune of others, we all shuffled into another corner last night, schadenfreude’s cousin; we’re not laughing at you, we’re crying with you but trying very hard to accept this avalanche of misfortune through the more edible prism of humor.

I’m so grateful I could bear witness to what happened last night, and more than that I’m grateful to comedy and to Tig Notaro for being not only courageous enough and not only spirited enough but for being so endlessly, achingly HONEST with all of us, the stunned, mouth-breathing strangers in the dark.

I’m bursting, spewing and otherwise ebola-ing with excitement to finally share with you my SDCC schedule. This is how excited I am as write this blog unshowered/unshaved on this fine Sunday morning!

Why is this year so special? Because I have a brand new show to thrust upon your optic nerves called Save the Supers. Logline alert! (pls read using Trailer guy voice) “They finally let reality cameras infiltrate the hallowed gates of the Super Force HQ, exposing the world’s most prominent superheroes. It’s The Justice League meets The Office!”

The first episode goes LIVE on July 11^thon My Damn Channel right at the start of Comic-con, but for now follow us at www.twitter.com/SuperForceHQ or on www.facebook.com/SuperForceHQ. Throughout the whole week, we’ll be screening the first episode along with exclusive footage only to be seen by those at SDCC, mix with the cast and crew, and get this FREE poster signed (gorgeously designed by Josie Kavadoy @JoVSz)!

But that’s not the only news I’ve got to chunkify your Campbell’s soup. We’ve finally got our DVD Cover art made for The Legend of Neil DVD* (pre-orders will be announced at the end of July!). We’ll be giving away 250 free LARGE beautifully printed posters of the cover art. This is a picture of it as a work in progress. It’s a Greg Aronowitz (@gregaronowitz) original, he painted it!

You just have to show up to the Roddenberry Booth (#2543) on the convention center trade show floor, and sign up for our mailing list to be the first to be notified about the DVD release, and voila you get hooked up. Then show up during any of our signing times, myself and/or Tony will sign it for FREE, which is approximately $65 dollars less than Lou Ferrigno would sign it for! I suggest showing up early to the Booth to get the poster, and to come to our joint signing on Thursday if you want both of our signatures.

MUST. WATCH. If you’ve ever wondered just how many random celebrities you could cram into a remake of “Let It Be” you now have the answer. I’m so happy that this exists. I mean from The Hulk, to Freddy Krueger, to Norm from Cheers, to Tanya Harding, this thing has got it all! And it’s for Norwegian Television, which kudos to them for having the cash to hire all these guys AND license the rights to a freakin Beatles song?! How much money does Norwegian TV have?! Seriously, there’s, what 40 celebs who all must have cost roughly $20K each AT LEAST. That’s $800,000 right there. Clearly, I’m writing for the wrong country.

I also love that the two guys that get to riff are Carlton and Theo. Really, Norway, the two black guys. I think they thought one of them was that whiny guy from Boyz 2 Men, but they couldn’t figure out which one it was so they let them both riff. Nice, Norway, nice.

I posted this on http://www.streamys.org/2010/04/12/open-letter-from-the-executive-producers/ but I’m waiting for it to be accepted by moderators, so I’m posting it here.

Guys (referring to the Producers) this is so hard for me to say because I consider you all my friends. But this apology is simply not enough. I really tried to come to peace with all that went down, but ultimately the problems are too great and stem from a total disregard for the purpose of the Streamys and the IAWTV, at least in regard to how I was sold on it.

I’m all for crass humor, but this wasn’t the right venue for it. There were CHILDREN at the show, and parents watching across the world. I make a pretty crass show myself, so it’s hard for me to attack the humor, but at least we have warnings on our show and people know what to expect going into it. There is a reason I don’t let my nieces watch my show, but I would have invited them to your show based upon last year’s show.

I totally understand technical difficulties, and generally I’d be ok with giving a pass on that, but ultimately you are a show that’s about awarding the best in web television, and thus shouldn’t streaming the show correctly been a much higher on the priority list? It was billed as a LIVE STREAMING event to legitimize web television. The tech should’ve been paramount! All contingencies should’ve been thought about, pre-planned. Ultimately you had one shot to make it go right, and that’s why you’ve got to bring on a competent crew. Unfortunately it’s an A/Fail system, and it was a HUGE fail. In business, when things go that awry, whoever was in charge generally gets canned. But, hey, that’s easy to say in retrospect and as someone who didn’t deal with it, but still it’s embarrassing across the board.

But those issues aside what disappoints me the most is hearing how people were treated. Your own nominees. The whole SPIRIT of this show was COMPLETELY OFF and that I’m having a REAL hard time forgiving. Nominees unable to walk the carpet but tv celebrities CAN? Nominees stuck in depths of the balcony, unsure that they were going to even get tickets? Was it ever in question that Patrick Duffy could get a ticket? I think his show is pretty damn funny, but it wasn’t nominated. So if it wasn’t a question for him, it should never have been a question for Chase of Horrible Turn and yet he was on “standby?” Then there were people who built your set pieces being LIED to about their compensation. There are just too many issues that I’ve heard that are just too offensive and plain MEAN to ignore. The Horrible Turn creator’s blog was literally one of the saddest pieces I’ve read, and you guys need to read it and REALLY TAKE IT TO HEART.http://horribleturn.tumblr.com/

It just felt wrong all across the board. Even Nick Thune ripping on every Audience Choice award video was the wrong tone. I get it, it’s humor, self-depracating, but we’re trying to trumpet what we do as something important and noteworthy. Why do we have to rip on ourselves at EVERY single turn? We make no money? Really, because I’m paying rent with something and web content creation is my full time job. It’s not TV money to be sure and I still have to pinch every penny, but hell it’s a living– a living that I built for myself with the POWER of the web.

No one knows us? Really, because of our meaningless web shows, I’ve been mauled at conventions, asked for my autograph countless times, even asked to sign someone’s baby (which I didn’t do)! I had Joss Whedon come up to me last year and quote my own show to my face (a highlight of my life), and had my comedy heroes Phil Lamarr and David Wain tell me that they really enjoy my stuff. I had a guy come up to me during the Emerald City Con in Seattle tell me that The Guild cheered him up so much when he was going through chemotherapy that he associates his recovery from cancer with our show! All these things are more than I’ve EVER DREAMED in my life. All due to the power of the web and the hard work of every single cast and crew member on The Guild and The Legend of Neil.

Lastly, someone needs to take some responsibility for this debacle and that person has to go. HAS TO. Who made the call that NOMINEES couldn’t walk the red carpet but TV stars could? Who was THAT PERSON?! Someone made that call, it wasn’t an accident and that person HAS TO GO. Who made the call that a 10 minute sketch about vagina reconstruction was more important to be in the show than having the craft awards in the main show? That person needs to be fired. Who was the person that didn’t communicate with the sponsors about the content of the show thus leading to Trident walking out half way through? That person needs to be fired. Who was the person that couldn’t figure out how to stop the host’s microphone being transmitted through the oft-broken stream when he was off stage? That person needs to be fired. Who thought to not have security such that a streaker can run across the stage TWICE and allow Chris Hardwick to be sexually assaulted? Fired. Someone’s got to step up and take responsibility. All of these gaffes did not happen in a vacuum.

Maybe “fired” is the wrong word. But someone needs to issue a public apology and step down otherwise the Streamy name is meaningless. The Streamys were built to mean something to help legitimize all of our shows. We SOLD Trident and our sponsors on the concept that people CARE about what we do, that there’s an audience. And right now the Streamys brand is completely tainted. And because of that trainwreck of a show all our associated shows share some of that taint. It might not yet be AIG bad, but it’s bad enough that I’m not sure I want to be involved anymore.

I’ve enjoyed the past few years and our growing friendship. And I have faith that you guys will find a way to do the right thing. But someone just has to STEP FORWARD and be honest with us. This isn’t just going away.

Ok, now lastly lastly, I just have to respond Aaron Kaiser regarding the membership or voting process. I’m an IAWTV member and frankly I have no idea how all of it is handled. We are just as in the dark as you are with regard to the mechanisms of the membership and voting process. All I know is we’re not allowed to vote on our own shows. I don’t know who gets rejected to membership or why. This is probably my own fault for not being more involved, but I want to assure you that most of the membership is just as befuddled and frustrated as you are. And frankly I’m not sure its a sandbox I want to be associated with at this juncture.
